The End of the Rope

Helio’s POV

The man in the black hood was Garth Feuer. Everyone knew this. My father had called upon him many times over the years. I hoped never to have to use him again. In fact, I’d be ecstatic if I had to pay his retainer for him to do nothing for the rest of his life.

Today, however, Garth Feuer donned the black hood once more for Drake Capri’s execution. The boulder of a man stood, immovable like a mountain, on the platform of the gallows, his black-gloved hands crossed before him. Waiting.

“Bring out the prisoners!” I called from the balcony where all the nobles stood. “Capri last.”

There was a roar among the gathered people below, a handful of protests, but most calling for blood.

The guards brought the traitors to stand before the gallows. All but Drake Capri. I could see the fear ……
