“Then King Branch the Mighty did slay King Job of Meadow Haven and did annex that land to Erupting Eclipse,” I droned, thinking the history books we had on Erupting Eclipse were as dry as a week-old biscuit. “In the seventh century—”

My lady’s maid came bustling into the library. “Your Majesty, the king wishes to see you.”

I really need to find a corner in the library I can hide in. I smiled at Chione. “Thank you. I’ll be there presently.”

Chione smiled back and bustled out the way she came.

I put Erupting Eclipse: A History back on the shelf and walked slowly to my father’s office. Apparently, this was something he couldn’t tell me over the mind-link. He probably wanted to be able to tell Mother he’d spoken to me in person. He was the kind of man who handled things……
