She couldn’t have said what I just heard. No, my ears were hearing things.
“What did you just say?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to say that. I wasn’t meant to say anything. It was just because you were questioning my morality that I didn’t know when it came out”
I shook my head and laughed.
“If it’s a joke, stop it right now. I don’t find that funny at all”
“I’m sorry, please. I didn’t mean to say it”
“Dr. Emily!”
Me screaming her name shut her and cut off her numerous unnecessary apologies.
“What did you just say to me? Tell me that you were just kidding and didn’t mean what you said”
I watched her swallow with a look of contrition on her face.
“Dr. Emily! Tell me that you just lied to me!”
“I’m sorry, Miss Zoe, but it’s the truth.”
My mind replayed the words that came out of her mouth only mom……
