I still wasn’t sure what I was going to say that could convince him about the medicine because it wasn’t boding well for me already. What if I met the same fate as all those women who were killed by his hands?
“It’s not mine. I saw it there when I came in. I think it belongs to one of the maids. Maybe she forgot it there.”
The lies rolled effortlessly off my tongue like I had practiced them a million times before. My stomach coiled tight with tension as I wondered whether he believed me. The secret behind lying excellently was to leave it short and sweet, so it was easier to recall the next time it was brought up, but I had gone and said far more than was necessary.
