The night was still, far too still for my liking. I sat alone in my study, the only sound the rhythmic ticking of the clock on the wall and the soft hum of the lamp above my desk. The faint scent of the forest seeped in through the open window, but my mind was too preoccupied to care about the outside world. I was focused on the message that had just come in. Mason had sent it.

I stared at my phone for a moment, the message burning into my eyes.

The man has been given the poison. He won’t last long.

My lips curled into a small, satisfied smile. This was it. This was the beginning of the end for Axel. The plan was unfolding exactly as I wanted. The poison would do its work, and soon, I wouldn’t have to worry about him standing in my way anymore.
