I took a deep breath and blurted out the truth. "Alethea, we're mates," I said, my heart racing with excitement and nerves.
Alethea's jaw dropped in shock, and she stared at me like I had just told her the most unbelievable thing she had ever heard. "What?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
I nodded, trying to calm my racing heart. "I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. I've been feeling it for weeks now, and I couldn't deny it anymore."
Alethea looked like she had been punched in the gut. She stumbled backward, her eyes wide with shock, and her face pale. "No, that's not possible," she whispered, shaking her head. "We can't be mates."
I took a step closer to her, trying to reassure her. "I kno……
