CHAPTER 1
Alethea's POV
‘The suffocating air...’ I bemoaned in my head, stealing a glance at Elaine who was looking out through the window, her portrait screaming of anger, pain and hate so thick that even my wolf Astrid, could feel the weight of emotions being accumulated in the car.
“I can't wait to give Kaiden a surprise. I can't believe we have been together for a year now and soon we're getting married,” I squealed in delight, unable to keep my calm any longer, a huge smile adorning my face and twinkles in my eyes.
“Whatever you say...” Elaine replied coldly, still looking out the window, obviously uninterested in what I was going on about.
‘She's in a mood unsurprisingly. I would do worse if I found out that my mate betrayed me.’ I thought to myself, staring at her side profile for a few seconds, hurt flashing past my eyes for barely a second before it was replaced with my cherry atmosphere once again.
“Oh come on, don't be like that. You'll find someone better than Cooper… someone like my fiance, Kaiden,” I said in a giggle, literally letting go of the car wheels in my excitement.
But what did I get in return? A bored look was draped on Elaine's face as she scoffed indifferently, not slightly scared about the prospect of meeting her death but she did comment dryly, “I have a feeling, you'd kill us if you don't stop all this pointless excitement. For all I care, you're probably just an assistant while the main chick is going down on his rod right now,” Elaine's voice was filled with a trace of mockery so much that I bit down hard on my lip, choosing to focus on the road instead of engaging in an argument especially given her condition.
“That was too harsh, now she's taking her anger out on you.” My wolf said, slightly annoyed at Elaine's word.
Her harsh words hung in the air, silence overcoming us as the only sound being heard was the soft hum of the engine.
Slowly letting down the window, the cold air quickly rushed in, relieving me from the oppressing air between us, as I listened to the sound of the soft rustling of leaves outside.
After a few moments, Elaine's expression softened, her gaze drifting away from the scenery to stare at me. “I'm sorry, Ale,” she muttered, her voice barely audible.
I smiled, my eyes meeting hers briefly before returning to the road. “It's okay, Elly. I know you're hurt,” I noted, as I swerved the car wheels to the right.
“But you'd need to tone down all these sarcasm, Elly. Just because Cooper was having some plain lady wet his d*ck doesn't mean Kaiden is like that. Do you see the way he is all over me? His love for me never got sour despite that it's been a year. Even when I do a lot of trashy stuff, he doesn't ever get angry…” I said, my voice filled with a giggle, almost sounding conspiratorial.
“Way to go b***h!” my wolf stumped, I could almost seeing her waving her tail dismissively at me. “Haven't you understood that she doesn't need this?”
Yeah she truly didn't. My bad. But I just couldn't help not defending my mate.
Elaine's face quickly switched from somber to anger in an instant as she said in an outburst, “Just shut up for a second, Ale. That was exactly how Cooper was, all sweet and s**t. But he cheated on me with another woman who wasn't even half as sexy as I was.”
Seeing her furious outburst, I kept mute for a while, deciding to just focus on the road. But that didn't stop my eyes from repeatedly glancing at Elaine once in a while. As soon as I noticed her expression got better, only then did I break the silence that had pervaded our space for far too long. “Elly, I know you're hurt, but Kaiden is different. He's kind, genuine, and loving…”
Elaine's brow furrowed, fiercely cutting me off, her words dripping with skepticism. “Do you never get tired of defending him? They're all the same, Alethea. They'll charm you, sweet-talk you, and then rip your heart out when you least expect it.”
My face fell, my eyes clouding over with sheer disappointment. “That's not fair, Elly. You don't know the whole story. Kaiden loves me, flaws and all. We have our ups and downs, but we work through them together. That's what relationships are all about, right?”
By then, Elaine's look was that of indifference once again, her voice laced with sarcasm. “Whatever, babe. I hope you're right, for your own sake. But I'm not holding my breath. You have a long history of making poor choices in men, and forgive me, but I can't trust your judgment on this one.”
I laughed in response, pulling up outside Kaiden's gate. “It's almost a year and you still can't trust my judgment? Trust me, he'll never cheat on me, he's my mate anyways…” I trailed off, realizing my slip up but a quick glance at Elaine told me that she was barely paying any attention to me or my words, and was rather lost in her own broken world.
“Okay we're here!” I announced, pulling up in front of Kaiden's gate as I took off my seatbelt and grabbed my bag. “Don't bother coming to pick me tomorrow, Kaiden will drop me off at school.”
I alighted from the car and waited for her to alight as well, come over to me. Embracing her quickly, she got into the car and soon sped off leaving me behind.
“For your sake, I do hope you find a man soon enough who will love you for you.” I muttered inaudibly, watching her car till it was out of sight, then remembering where I was, a happy smile quickly replaced the previously sombre look as I skipped happily into the compound.
As soon as I got into the house, the first sound I heard was a faint moaning sound coming from the bedroom and I muttered to myself with the thought that he was m**********g, as usual, “Tell me he wasn't at it again today.”
With a half smile on my face, I made my way to the bedroom. However, the moans only grew louder, and it didn't take a while before my werewolf ears picked up Kaiden's violent grunts and the slapping of skins. Then, I heard a moan from... I pushed the door open to find my boyfriend entangled in the sheets with my best friend, Sophia.
“Oh no….” I whispered, my voice barely audible over Kaiden's grunts and Sophia's moans but he heard it.
Shock was written all over his face as he pulled out and turned to face me, shock written all over his face. Tears blurred my vision as I furiously blinked, trying to dispel the vision before me.
“How?” I choked out, my voice shaking. “How could you do this to me?” My eyes darted between him and Sophia, his face pale while Sophia had a look on disgust on hers.
I wanted him to say something, anything at all but Sophia beat him to him, her voice laced with disgust. “You're just as much to blame, Alethea. You were too blind to see what was going on right in front of you. And now, you're to late because I'm pregnant for him.” My heart felt like it was shattering into a million pieces.
“You're pregnant!?” Kaiden said, totally forgetting that I existed as he rushed back to Sophia.
“Dammit, Sophia! You were supposed to be my best friend!” I screamed, pulling at my hair.
Astrid, my wolf, howled in pain within me, sensing my anguish. I couldn't bear the scene anymore. “I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.” I said, taking a step back, to rest my back on the door, to support my weak frame. “I need to get out of here,” I muttered, taking another step back.
Sophia spat, “Just go, Alethea. You're not welcome her
e anymore.” I turned and did the only thing that came to my mind.
