Inside the largest marquee, Alaric approaches Cody. He feels like he is walking on a knife edge, all these years pushing Rhys down. Why does he feel now that it wasn’t nearly enough? He looks his favored son up and down, he seems better, but that doesn’t make that feeling of dread fade away completely.
"You had better be ready Cody"
Cody waves his hand dismissively, he has had a night to process his mother's words. He cannot be beaten by his own mind and that is all it comes down to. Rhys is not better than him, he is just lucky and his luck is about to run out.
"You act as if one bad day is going to unravel everything I have worked towards. I know what I have to do, I know what is at stake"
The confidence in Cody’s words reassure Alaric a little but not nearly enough.
