Margot’s sharp gaze pierced through me like a dagger. “Speak,” she demanded, her voice cold and unyielding.
My heart raced as the sound of guards’ footsteps grew louder. Panic bubbled in my chest, threatening to spill over. Kyla shot me a desperate look, her face pale and her breathing uneven.
I had to think fast.
“I—I wasn’t feeling well,” I stammered, my voice shaky but loud enough to catch Margot’s attention. “Kyla was helping me get to the healer’s den to get some medicine. That’s all.”
Margot raised a skeptical eyebrow, her arms still crossed.
“Sick?” she repeated, her tone dripping with disbelief.
“Yes,” I nodded quickly, clutching my stomach for added effect. “I didn’t want to disturb anyone, so I asked Kyla to help me. I thought it would be faster this way.”
Kyla caught on immediately……
