The silence between Kyla and me was suffocating as we hurried back through the dim corridors of the palace. The flickering light from our single torch cast strange, dancing shadows on the stone walls, making every corner seem alive with movement. Each step echoed faintly, and my heart pounded so loudly that I feared the guards might hear it over everything else.
“Move faster,” Kyla whispered harshly, her eyes darting around. She still had my arm in a vice-like grip, dragging me forward.
“I’m trying,” I murmured, my voice trembling. My legs felt like lead, my body still weak from everything I’d been through. The reality of what we’d nearly done—what we’d almost been caught doing—sent icy chills down my spine.
“Trying isn’t good enough,” Kyla hissed. “You got us into this mess, and I’m not ……
