AUTHOR’S POV
Mika slams the car door shut just as her mother gets into the passenger seat. "Let me drive, Mika," Camila says, her voice tinged with concern. But Mika doesn’t answer; she can’t.
The engine roars to life, and she accelerates, causing her mother to grip the door as the tires screech against the pavement. "Mika, please. You’re shaking. Just pull over and let me—”
"No," Mika finally says, gripping the wheel tighter. Her hands tremble so much that she can barely keep her grip, and her vision blurs with unshed tears. If she allows them to fall, she will break.
The speedometer rises as she merges onto the highway, weaving between cars like a woman possessed, and Camila's fingers dig into the seat, watching her daughter with her heart in her throat.
Mika wracks her brain for the hospital……
