I remain frozen in my seat long after the detectives left. This is it; I did it. I just hope it’s enough. I hope Lucas was right—that the cops will want someone to answer for what happened, no matter who that person is, and will work hard to ensure Wade is imprisoned for life, even though it makes no difference how long because I don't need a lifetime to get what I want from him.
Swallowing, I reach for the hotel phone and call the helpline Wade mentioned. I ask for a lawyer and explain the situation, providing only the necessary information. They list my options, and I choose a representative, who says he will contact me as soon as possible.
