“Why do you care?”
I didn’t have an answer. Not one that made sense, anyway. “I just do.”
She nodded, as if that was enough. And maybe it was. For a moment, we sat in silence, the distance between us shrinking. I saw the way her shoulders relaxed, the way her guard lowered just a little. It hit me then—she wasn’t just another responsibility. She wasn’t a burden. She was... something else. Someone else. And I couldn’t keep pretending that she didn’t matter.
I pushed off the doorframe, taking a step closer. “Look, I know I haven’t made this easy for you. I’ve... I’ve been distant. Cold.”
She didn’t deny it. “Yeah. You have.”
“I’m sorry.” The words felt strange, unfamiliar, but they were true. “I thought keeping my distance would protect you. Protect the pack. But I was wrong.”
