Once William was cleaned up, he led her back the living room. The two sat down and he said, "Me and Vivian went to the Star Apartment; that is true, but all we did was chat. That’s all. Nothing more. It feels a little weird that I even have to explain it to you. Somehow, the more I defend myself, the guiltier I appear… but I am innocent. I swear it.”
“Have you made this clear to Vivian,” Lucy asked, “that there is no future for the two of you?”
“I have,” William replied. “Believe me. I have!”
Lucy looked at him unsurely. Even now, she did not know if she trusted William. He hadn’t come home the night before, and she was suspicious about his story as to where he’d been and what he’d done. Vivian had once been his girlfriend. Lucy felt that, if she were ……
