IN A WEEK
XAVIER'S POINT OF VIEW:
The drive home felt longer than I remembered, though maybe that was just my nerves. Isabella sat in the passenger seat, quiet and withdrawn, her gaze fixed out the window. She hadn’t said much since we left the hospital, and I didn’t push her. I glanced at her every so often, worried about how pale she still looked. Her fingers were clasped tightly in her lap, her body stiff as if bracing herself for something. Did this place feel like a prison to her now?
"We’re here." I said softly, trying to keep my voice steady.
She nodded but didn’t move right away. Her eyes lingered on the house, and I couldn’t tell what she was thinking.
"Take your time." I added, hoping to ease whatever tension she was feeling.
After a moment, she reached for the door handle and stepp……
