Isabella stepped outside, the cold air a welcome contrast to the stifling warmth of the fireplace. A sound stopped her Xavier’s laughter. It came from the old pine tree near the fence. Curious, she moved closer, her boots crunching softly in the snow. What she saw froze her in place.
"Xavier." She whispered, her breath catching cold night air.
There he was, leaning close to another woman. The woman’s face, illuminated by the lights, was achingly familiar. Isabella’s stomach churned as she recognized her: the woman from the photos Xavier kept hidden. His first love.
"I never stopped thinking about you." The woman said softly.
Xavier’s reply came like a dagger.
"Neither did I."He said.
Isabella watched, paralyzed, as they kissed beneath the heavy branches of the pine. The frost biting her cheeks was nothing compared to the icy weight in her chest. She turned and walked back into the house, her movements mechanical. Isabela grabbed her coat, scarf, and gloves, slipping out the back door into the night without a sound. He knew he never loved so she knew what she had to do. It was arranged marriage after all. She put down signed divorce papers and left.
The next morning, Xavier woke up to the wind rattling the windows. The bed beside him was cold.
"Isabella?" He called her.
There was no reply. Her coat was gone, and her boots missing from their place by the door. Panic set in as he searched the house, calling her name. The silence was deafening. Soon he found divorce papers on the table.
"You can not leave me, Isabella. Not in this life."Xavier said.
He knew that he wasn't going to let her go so easily. Especially not before Christmas.

The sound of the doorbell echoed through the house, pulling me from the warmth of the blankets. I sat up, rubbing my eyes as Xavier walked past the bedroom door, already dressed and heading toward the front door.

"Who’s that so early?" I mumbled, following him.
