“What are you sure of, then?” Kai asked, growing frustrated. Zayd shrugged a shoulder, a gesture he realized he had picked up from Lilyan. Anytime he asked her a question and she did not want to answer, she gave a shrug and either did not answer or changed the subject. Zayd suppressed a smile.
“All I know,” Zayd said, “is that she's a 14-year-old girl that has been through more than anyone should. She lost her mother and her grandmother. Her uncle hurts her and I've sworn to protect her, just as I was ordered to do.”
“Don't tell me you've gotten attached,” Kai accused with a frown. Zayd returned it.
“So what if I have?” he challenged, squaring his shoulders. Kai's brows furrowed in anger. He was no longer used to Zayd speaking to him that way.
