RUBY JUNE.
After my mother stormed out, slamming the door so hard that it rattled the frame, I just stood there. My breath came out in short, uneven gasps, and I could still feel the heat from her slap burning on my cheek. The room was too quiet, too still, like the air had been sucked out of it. My hands trembled as I tried to steady myself, but the weight of everything hit me all at once.
I had stood up to her. I had finally said what I had been holding back for years. But instead of feeling proud or strong, I felt…hollow. My heart pounded in my chest, not out of anger anymore, but out of pure, raw pain. It was like all the years of trying, all the years of hoping for her love, had come crashing down in one brutal moment.
“Ruby?” Doreen’s soft voice pulled me out of my daze. I hadn’t even ……
