CHARLES FOX.
It has been four months since I last saw the woman of my dreams. The angel who stole my breath away, the mysterious lady who made me feel things I have never felt with anyone.
For a long time, I fantasized about the day I would finally meet my mate, to hold her in my arms lovingly, to show her all the love she deserves, and more. To be the best mate she could ever ask for, but when I finally found her, she slipped right out of my arms, never to be seen again.
I have searched tirelessly for her, for my Morana, but not one person at the party, not even the host, had heard of her name. Every night, I dream of her, that we are in the masquerade ball once again, dancing together, and every time I try to remove her mask, I wake up, never seeing her beautiful face. I wondered if she thought of me like I did her, that I consumed her mind every waking hour like she did mine.
The memories of the kiss we shared were a bittersweet feeling because why I was intoxicated by it, she was offended and ran away. I kept replaying the scenario, wondering what I did wrong. Was it the kiss? That couldn’t be it; after all, I knew I was a good kisser. I wondered if she thought I was repulsive, but even that was hard to believe. Only she could answer that question, and I do not know how to find her.
But she had left me one thing: a beautiful bracelet. It had fallen off her hand while she was running away, and it had an initial G.J
I thought the clue would help my private investigator find her, but I found nothing.
My office door flew open, and my best friend Seth walked in. I quickly kept the bracelet in my pocket, but it was too late; Seth had already seen it.
“Still hung up by your mysterious woman,” he teased as he sat opposite me.
I sighed and leaned back behind my chair as I spun my pen around. “I can’t help it,”
“What if you were drunk and you made up all this scenario? It’s very strange that not one person has ever heard of Morana, which is a very rare name,” Seth said.
I frowned. “She wasn’t a part of my imagination, or would you explain it thus?” I asked, showing him the bracelets. “ I wondered why she ran away,”
“Maybe she doesn’t want a mate, and she did not want to break your poor heart by doing the rejection rituals,” Seth argued.
I shook my head; that was absurd. Why wouldn’t she want to be with me? I am an Alpha of the biggest pack on the continent—wealthy, smart, and handsome. Not to sound cocky, but what’s there not to like?
“There’s got to be another reason,” I said, caressing the bracelet.
“Maybe she is married to someone else,” Seth teased.
My wolf growled, and I could feel my pulse rising. The thought of my mate being with another man made me jealous.
“Relax, man, I was only joking,” Seth said, laughing, but I did not find it funny.
I snarled at him before looking out of the window. From my office, I could see the large expanse of my city. I wondered where my Morana was hiding. After a moment of silence, I turned to face Seth. “What brings you here?” I asked.
He sighed heavily, looking more serious. “Your mom wishes to see you. She is very ill.”
***************
I ran into our large pack house, not waiting another minute after Seth informed me my mom was ill. It was a miracle I didn’t have an accident on my way here.
“Where is my mom?” I asked the housemaids after not finding her in her bedroom. “Where is she?” I panicked.
“It’s okay, son. I’m right here,” she said, stretching her arms to hug me.
I raised my eyebrows in confusion. “Seth informed me that you are sick,” I said as I studied her. She looked anything but sick; in fact, she seemed healthier than the last time I was home.
“I’m fine, my love. It was the only way to bring you down here,” she smiled widely as she came closer to hug me.
“You act as if I wasn’t here last week,” I said, squeezing the bridge of my nose. “I had to cancel a meeting to come see you.”
She frowned. “Is it wrong for a poor mom to want to spend time with her only son?”
“No, Mom,” I sighed weakly.
She pulled away. “I have guests that I would like you to meet.”
I followed her as she led me to the large hall. Standing in the middle were ten beautiful girls. Well, nine beautiful girls—the last one looked rather plain.
“Who are they?” I asked, turning to face my mom.
“I have selected ten beautiful, eligible girls from good backgrounds who could be your breeder and provide an heir to our kingdom—a grandchild for me,” she said proudly.
“I do not need a breeder,” I frowned.
“You can’t say that! Every Alpha needs an heir, and besides, I’m not getting any younger,” she said with a pout.
“How many times do I have to tell you, Mom? I don’t need a breeder. I already have a mate and intend to spend the rest of my life with her,” I said. “No offense, ladies, but no one compares to my sweet Morana. She is the perfect one for me.”
“So where is she?” she asked, fondling her arms. “I am beginning to think it’s one of your flimsy excuses to avoid providing this pack with an heir.”
“She ran away, but I will find her soon enough,” I said.
My mother shook her head. “If she ran away, it means she doesn’t love you. So get over yourself and find someone else.”
I frowned, clenching my fists. “This conversation is over.”
I was about to leave when my mom, dramatically as always, collapsed to the ground and started crying.
"Please, Charles, you have to understand!" she sobbed. "It's my greatest wish to see my grandchildren before I die."
“Fine, Mom,” I said reluctantly. “I will pick three girls, but only to appease you. I still intend to find Morana and make her my mate.”
Her eyes lit up, and she immediately stopped crying, a smile forming on her face. “Oh, thank you, Charles! You won’t regret this, I promise.”
I turned to face the ten girls standing nervously in the hall and randomly pointed to three girls. “You, you, and you,” I said, gesturing to a blonde girl, a brunette, and a redhead.
The chosen girls stepped forward, looking relieved and excited.
“Thank you, Charles,” my mom said, wiping away the last of her fake tears. “You’ve made me so happy.”
“I hope this satisfies you, Mom. But remember, my heart belongs to Morana.”
“I understand, my love,” she said, hugging me tightly. “I just want you to have the best of everything.
I was about to leave when my eyes drifted to the last girl. She looked plain and homely but had an irresistible aura that drew me to her. I walked up to her, and when I stared into her eyes, it reminded me of that night at the ball.
“What’s your name?” I asked.
“Ruby,” she murmured, then more clearly, “My name is Ruby.”
Her voice caused chills to run all over my body, but I knew she was not the one. Morana was different and more beautiful.
“Be my breeder, Ruby,” I said, surprising even myself with the words.
