I tried to send Lucy to the living room, but she stayed glued to my side as the two uniformed officers crowded into the entryway.
Gabe had regained consciousness but he was still dazed and confused, sitting on the floor with his feet out in front of him like a toddler. The bigger officer leaned over him. “Hello, Mr. Segretto. What are you on?”
“Nothin’,” Gabe mumbled.
Raphael was busy giving the other officer the detailed story of how Gabe had burst in the house, interrupted dinner, and quickly became angry and aggressive. He pointed out the slight bruise that was appearing on his jaw, and the damaged wall.
“Ma’am?” The officer turned to me, “can you tell me what happened?”
“It was just like he said,” I replied, absently stroking Lucy’s head. “Rafe got him out of the kitchen and tried to ……
