It seemed to take forever before I could get a moment alone with Beth. First, she was taking care of my mother, then she was serving breakfast, then there was breakfast clean-up. When the dishes were washed and put away and the table and counters cleared and wiped, she then went into the study to get Lucy started on her home school assignments, while Mom got comfortable with the morning paper. Meanwhile, I sent Rachel to the Town Hall to start the permit applications for the repairs and renovations we planned to make at the resort.
“Where can we talk?” I asked quietly.
Beth glanced nervously back to the study where Lucy was bent over a worksheet. “Maybe we should go upstairs.”
“Fine,” I gestured for her to lead the way. We climbed the creaking stairs, and she stepped into Gabe’s old r……
