Arriving home, I barely had the door open before I heard my mother rushing over. Her face lit up with relief the moment she saw me, and we hugged tightly, her arms squeezing me as if she had not seen me in years.
“How was your first day?” she asked, pulling back just enough to look into my eyes, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. “It went well,” I said with a tired voice from lack of sleep. It was now afternoon, and she told me she was almost done making lunch, taking the lunch bag that I had taken to work, and my stomach growled on cue.
I hadn’t realized how hungry I was until she mentioned food. I wanted to take a shower, but I decided to wait and eat first. Then I would get some sleep.
Maia said she would finish her classes around 2 p.m., and I wanted to get up around ……
