"What?" Angie could not believe what she had just heard from her boss, Gordon Jones. "I can't believe you just said that."

"I'm serious. There is that senior analyst position that needs to be filled and you would be a great choice."

"So then, promote me."

"Well, I have a choice between you and Joyce (the other analyst in the office). I'm under pressure, all the branches are under pressure to promote minorities, so promoting Joyce would earn me some diverse hiring points."

"But I'm better than her."

"Yes, you are, much better, but either choice could be easily justified. I'm leaving for the home office in five months, so it doesn't matter to me either way. I do like you much better, but you'll still do a good job regardless of whether you are promoted or ……
