“I—I didn’t mean—” I stammered. “I’ll talk to her, I’ll explain it wasn’t—”
James cut me off with a wave of his hand. “Don’t bother. She’s already jumped to conclusions, and the entire office will have heard some ridiculous version of this by the time lunch rolls around. Gossip spreads like wildfire.”
I bit my lip. This wasn’t how I wanted the day to go, but damn it, he was acting like it was nothing more than a small inconvenience—like I was nothing more than an inconvenience.
“Well, excuse me for trying to fix this,” I shot back, my voice sharper than I intended. I didn’t even bother hiding my frustration anymore. He wasn’t giving me anything—no real apology for last night, no acknowledgment of the disaster that had unfolded. It was just… business as……
