As the jet cruised smoothly through the sky, I reached for my phone.
James was sitting across from me, typing something on his laptop, completely absorbed in whatever world-dominating task he was doing. The silence between us wasn’t uncomfortable exactly, but it felt heavy. I needed a distraction. Something to ground me.
I unlocked my phone and typed a quick text to Mom.
Hey, just wanted to let you know I’m on a business trip to Chicago for a few days with James. Didn’t have much time to tell you before we left.
A few minutes passed, and I watched the message sit there without response. Maybe she was busy, or maybe she was just processing. I didn’t know why, but I needed Mom to give me something—some kind of sign that I wasn’t completely out ……
