That ticked the time bomb.
“Happy?” I repeated, my voice catching in my throat, as though the word was too small to contain all the confusion and anger swelling inside me. The word was like a thorn, digging deeper the more I thought about it. How could he stand there, so calm, so nonchalant, and say something so empty?
James didn’t seem to notice the way my eyes narrowed, the way my hands clenched at my sides. He simply nodded, stepping toward me as if he could smooth over the tension with just his presence. “Yeah,” he said, his tone easy and unbothered. “We’re happy, Liv. Isn’t that what matters?”
