Varian gave in to his thoughts and finally gave Ellen a call. The phone rang for quite a while before she picked up. Her voice was grumpy as if she was sleeping. He cast his eyes to the clock on the wall and knew that it was too late to be calling her.
"Someone better is dying or a house burning to the ground," she said and he gulped. He could hear the hidden threat in her voice.
"I am sorry I called so late," Varian said.
He heard shuffling and the sound of bedsheets before she let out a sound. Ellen sat up on her bed as she tried to decipher the voice she had just heard. Was it Varian? She had to confirm so she asked.
"Varian?"
"Yes" he said thanking his stars that her voice was calmer now.
"What brings you to call me at this hour?" she said after clearing out her throat.
Her voice was cleared ……
