I had to prepare for the meeting. Tradition among the Fae required women to wear long gowns, so I was given one—sent directly from the King of the Fae himself. The gown felt like a heavy secret draped across my shoulders because I couldn’t tell my Mates about it. If they found out, I’d be under their watchful eyes constantly, unable to even breathe without their interference. Somehow, they always managed to follow me wherever I went. This time, I had to find a way to distract them, even if only for a couple of hours.
Despite my efforts to mask it, I felt the tension from the others when I walked downstairs for breakfast. The effects of their lingering presence—and those two women I could barely tolerate—clung to me like shadows. I spotted them right away at the breakfa……
