Walking down the path toward the deep forest, I made a conscious effort to avoid stepping on the small creature scurrying underfoot.
The towering trees loomed above me, their canopy swaying in the faint breeze as birds chirped somewhere in the distance. Every step reminded me of my resolve: to tread lightly and leave no harm in my wake. But after three grueling hours, my body had other plans. My legs ached, my breaths came in shallow gasps, and exhaustion clung to me like a second skin.
“Let’s stop for a while and rest,” Flint said, glancing at Nick. His voice was calm, but I could hear the faint concern underneath.
