The moment Emma and I stepped out of the hidden passage, I pulled the bookshelf shut behind us, pressing my palm against the aged wood as if sealing a door to something we shouldn’t have found.
The house had always felt heavy, thick with secrets and untold stories, but this? This was different. Someone had been inside that passage before us. And that someone wasn’t a ghost.
Emma clutched the crumpled letter in her hand, her brows furrowed in deep thought. The dim light from the library’s tall windows cast shadows along her face, highlighting the conflict brewing beneath her composed exterior.
I knew that look. She wasn’t going to let this go.
