The moment the door slammed shut, the air in the study changed.
Tense. Unforgiving.
Emma sucked in a sharp breath, her fingers tightening around the edge of the desk. The flickering candlelight cast eerie shadows against the walls, making every movement feel like something unseen was shifting in the dark.
My heart pounded as I moved toward the door, fingers instinctively reaching for the handle. I turned it.
Locked.
Emma exhaled, her voice barely above a whisper. “We’re not alone.”
I met her gaze, my mind racing. There had been someone outside that door. Watching us. Listening.
Callum took a slow step forward, his body tense, his hand hovering near his coat as if he were prepared for something worse. “Step back,” he murmured.
