Sara’s POV
He was looking down at his phone, his face a mix of concentration and frustration.
“Derick?” I called out, my voice tentative.
He looked up, his expression softening when he saw me. “Sara, hey. I didn’t expect to run into you here.”
I managed a small smile. “Yeah, I’m visiting a friend and I will be staying here for a while. What about you? What are you doing here?” I quickly gave him an excuse.
He shrugged, putting his phone away. “I was in the neighborhood for a work thing and decided to take a walk. Needed to clear my head, you know?”
I nodded, understanding all too well. “Mind if I join you?”
“Of course not,” he said, patting the empty spot next to him on the bench.
We sat in silence for a moment, the tension between us slowly dissipating. It was nice, in a way—comfortable, like sli……
