“I don’t understand,” I say slowly. “Is this some kind of a joke?”
“No,” Adeline says. Her voice sounds different than it used to, or maybe it’s just because she’s never spoken to me before without an undertone of hatred or disdain. “No, it’s not. I… Everything I told your boss is true. I’m getting a divorce.”
“Why come to me?” I ask. “Of all the family lawyers in New York. Adeline, you never— I never got the impression that you liked me very much.”
“That’s one way of putting it,” she says dryly.
“And from what I’ve heard, your family isn’t exactly lacking in funds. You can afford the best of the best. So I’ll ask again, why me?”
