Amelia had thought this would be simple. She had been prepared for Oliver to be a little attached to the new environment, but she had expected him to leave with her without much of a fuss.
She had been wrong.
“No, Mommy!” Oliver wailed, clutching the leg of the couch and shaking his head vigorously. “I don’t want to go! I want to stay here!”
Amelia crouched beside him, forcing a reassuring smile despite the turmoil twisting in her chest. “Baby, we’re going home now. We can take your toys with us, and you’ll see Miss Lily and Miss Anne again if you want.”
Oliver sniffled, shaking his head harder. “But I like it here! It’s big, and Miss Lily makes my favorite cookies! And there’s a big garden with fishes in the pond! I don’t wanna go, Mommy!”
Amelia’s heart squeezed as she tried to reach for h……
