--Meta disclaimer-- Hamelin's relationship with his brothers is going to be important. I've tried to pull away from making Heston a purely despicable character, even if that might have been more effective in the short term. Despicable characters, to me, are caricatures of bad human behavior, embellished for effect without much logic behind it. While these are very effective at creating sympathy for the MC and driving conflict, I find that they cheapen the plot progression, and--even worse-- cheapens true evil, and how to identify it yourself and others. That being said, I am absolutely going to be using some despicable characters at times, but they will never be main antagonists, only momentary obstacles. Heston is too important to make into a caricature.
