Everything happened so fast.
Sergei turned and lunged at me, sinking his teeth in my right arm. Roy, using his last strength swiftly came across and hit Sergei, breaking his hold on my arm.
The hit did not send Sergei too far as he was already charging back, he hit Roy sending him flying across hitting a tree and laying there groaning in pain.
Sergei was coming after me once more when a bright white light flashed out of nowhere.
I don’t know what happened, all I felt was landing like a feather on the ground writhing in pain from Sergei’s bite. I crawl away from the bright light with my injured arm while shielding my eyes from the light with my good arm.
I hid behind some trees and bushes peeking to see what was going on.
The bright light had dimmed and transformed into the silhouette of a lady. Sergei growled, looking like he was contemplating his next move before he darted for the tree tops and ran away leaving his fallen Croonies comrades behind.
The lady figure looked like she was floating off the ground. She moved towards Roy, was she with him?
She held him up and did what looked like a healing maneuver on him because after coughing up blood for a while he began to move better.
“Come out from the bushes child”
The figure called, it took me a couple of seconds to realize it was me she was calling out to.
“Come out from the bushes child”
She called out again this time looking directly at me through my peephole.
Her voice sounded like a thousand soothing waves of water, so gentle and smooth yet holding so much authority.
I came out from my hiding place, gripping my wounded arm to stop the blood that was dripping down.
I do not know how much blood I had lost at this point.
“Come here, child”
She called me to come closer.
I couldn’t make out her face. It was too illuminating so I just winced and closed my eyes as I came closer.
She took my arm, it felt like it was submerged in a cool stream of water.
I think she is healing me, I thought to myself as the pain began to subside.
“The poison is coursing through your veins, but I have healed the flesh wound”
Did she just say poison? I thought to myself. Is she not supposed to be a healer? She couldn’t take the poison out?
“You couldn’t heal me of the poison too?”
I asked, still too scared to look up.
“Come, sit”
She said this time her voice sounded farther away, I looked up and she was standing in front of Roy who was resting under a tree munching away what looked like roasted Ox.
I looked at him with disbelief and he shrugged as if to say almost getting killed would work up an appetite.
I joined him under the foot of the tree and he passed me some roasted Ox, what do you know escaping death does work an appetite.
I looked up at the strange glowing figure in front of us and it was as if the light got dimmer. I could make out her facial features.
She had complex yet beautiful braided hair, it was grey.
Her eyes shone grey like the moon itself and her skin gave off a glow.
Oh, sh*t I thought to myself, of course, how did I not notice this whole time.
I was seated in front of Mahina, the moon goddess.
“Took you long enough to realize”
She said, looking at me as if reading my thoughts.
“Should I bow down or something?”
I asked genuinely not knowing what I was supposed to do or how I was supposed to act.
Roy scoffed, shaking his head, I turned immediately looking at him then back up to Mahina.
She smiled.
“I know you must be confused my child, you have been through a lot these last few days”
She said,
“Yeah well, Ma’am please I would love some answers and clarity. Nothing makes sense, I don’t know who to trust and I’m stuck with the man who killed my father”
I replied pointing to Roy without looking in his direction.
It sounded like he wanted to say something but held himself. I looked up at him and he held an expressionless look that he had mastered so well.
“And he is yet to utter one single f*cking word about it keeping this stupid blank expression every damn time”
I said as the emotions began to take over me again.
“I haven’t even had time to grief my father’s death”
I said with tears beginning to gather at the corner of my eyes.
“And the one person I felt I could still trust turns out to be a Croonie? A traitor?!”
I said my voice finally cracked giving way to uncontrollable sobs.
“So yes moon goddess ma’am with all due respect I need answers”
I said putting my head in between my bent knees while still sobbing away.
“Oh my child”
She said bending down and gently placing her finger under my chin lifting my head slowly.
I looked up and for the first time held her gaze, she had a look of real compassion and worry.
“I know of your pain my child, I see the raging storm in your mind and the grief in your heart”
She said getting on her knees and cupping my face in her two hands.
“You are a child of purpose and a child of prophecy, a prophecy that has already begun to unfold”
She said, looking at me and smiling.
“Prophecy?”
I was even more confused.
“What had that got to do with me? I don’t even have powers, I couldn’t manifest them.”
I kept talking.
“And now my people hate me because they believe I’m responsible for the death of my father thanks to this monster”
I said pointing at Roy who had been quietly watching what was going on.
“Come my child, let me show you the answers you have been searching for”
She said standing back up and stretching her hand.
I took her hand and stood up.
“To move forward we must visit the past, this is my story”
She said as I was taken into a trance with the moon goddess.
