Isolde's hand flew to her chest as she leaned her head against the car window, the world around her feeling distant and muted. A faint voice in front of her said something about the train, but she didn’t hear it. Tears no longer streamed down her face; her grief had left her empty, devoid of any emotion except for the searing pain that consumed her chest.
She never gave birth to them, but she raised and loved them since they were very young. Lake was eight months old and had bandages on his whole side when he arrived. It was shortly after she started at the orphanage and she was afraid of what he looked like under the bandages after she heard he had been in a fire.
