Not metaphorically. Not poetically. Alive — breathing, thinking, warring, grieving, loving — a civilization of celestial beings who wore starlight the way mortals wore skin. They called themselves the Aetheri, and they had existed since the universe first exhaled, and they believed, with the serene confidence of beings who had never known extinction, that they always would.
They were wrong.
