“You reek of fear,” Darius growled, his voice dark and low as his golden eyes pierced through her.
Josephine forced her trembling legs to stand tall, though her heart thundered so loudly she thought it might shatter.
“You don’t scare me,” she lied, her voice barely above a whisper.
His lips twisted into a cruel smile, sharp enough to draw blood. He moved closer, and the heat of him, the sheer presence of him, made her step back until her spine hit the stone wall behind her.
“Liar,” he murmured, his voice a dangerous caress. He leaned in, so close his breath fanned her cheek, and the musky, wild scent of him made her head spin.
“I could break you in two, little bride. And yet…”
His fingers grazed her jaw, tilting her chin upward, forcing her to meet his gaze. The fire in his eyes burned hotter, hungrier.
“And yet, I think I’ll keep you.”
