“Because I don’t want to keep you against your will, Valeria. I care about you, enough not to want to hold you here or be the reason something bad happens to you,” I say gravely.
“Would you stop being so f*****g self-sacrificing for five minutes and just tell me what you want? You’re always thinking about what’s best for everyone else, but what about what’s best for you? Just stop and tell me what you want!” She yells in frustration.
“YOU!” The word erupts from me of its own volition. “I want you,” I say as tears well up in my eyes, “I want you to stay; I want it more than I’ve ever wanted anything, and it scares me. I’ve lost everything that ever mattered, and so now I have nothing left to lose. If you stay, I have something to lose and that terrifies me.”
Silence stretches between us, and I can feel my heart pounding away in my chest. She must think I’m insane.
