ONE WORLD APART
Two worlds. One unexpected journey.
Allison Bennett has a short list of men she would never choose, and at the top of it is Mr. Blackwood, the cold, exacting hero of a bestselling series. She has said it loudly and often: she would never work for him, never marry him, and never spend a single day trying to please him.
Then her mother calls late one night with an emergency. Allison rushes for the door, misses a loose rug at the top of the stairs, and falls.
When she wakes, there is a chandelier above her, a house she has never seen, and a woman at her bedside telling her that breakfast is ready and Mr. Blackwood is waiting. The phone in her hand has no calls to her mother in two weeks. The only name in it is his. And everyone around her looks at her like someone they have known for years.
She has been placed in the life of his secretary, the woman who has worked at his side for seven years. A woman whose own life was hard and short on time, who gave everything to everyone else, and who wished, in a quiet moment, to see what a different life might feel like.
The wish was heard. It just went to the wrong person.
The woman is living Allison’s life now, healthy and free. And Allison is stuck in hers, in a city that looks like San Diego but isn’t, with no one to call and no way home.
Mr. Blackwood runs the Blackwood empire, and he does it without ever raising his voice. He is precise, closed off, and impossible to read. He is also the grandson of the woman who owns the company, and she has made one condition clear. He will not inherit it until he is married.
He has no time for love. He has no one he trusts. In seven years, only one person has stood beside him without flinching, matching his silence with her own.
So he makes his secretary an offer. One year. A marriage on paper, a divorce at the end, and a company in his name.
Allison says yes. If she wants to go home, the woman whose life she is wearing has to want hers back, and the only way to make that happen is to stay close enough to show her what is worth returning to. There may be another way home. Allison just doesn’t know what it costs.
The rules are simple. They share a house but not a room. They share a name but not a life. Nothing happens that isn’t written down.
Then one evening, for the first time in seven years, he asks what she thinks. And waits for her answer.
Neither of them mentions it. Neither of them forgets.
But a year is a short time, and a wish has a deadline of its own. When it runs out, only one of them gets to keep this life.
Two worlds. One year. And an ending neither of them wrote.

Unfold
When Allison opened her eyes, the first thing she noticed was the ceiling.
It was wrong.
She blinked slowly. The room was huge and elegant, with tall windows, heavy curtains, and a dresser against one wall.
She was lying on an enormous bed with soft, expensive-looking sheets.
She pushed herself up and looked around.
