The Mother is a story about revolutionary factory workers. It has been translated into many languages, and has also been adapted into a number of movies.
One of Maxim Gorky's firm convictions was that the purpose of literature was to raise a man's soul while expurgating seductive elements that subvert the peace and balance of life. The beginning of this novel transports the reader back in time giving them a glimpse into the lives of the workers of Krasinove Soromo Factory--living in a smoke-begrimed, greasy atmosphere, obedient to the summons of the power of steam-hastening forward like frightened cockroaches. It has some memorable speeches like, "when will we have mothers who rejoice at sending their children to death."
