The moment he saw me, relief crashed over his face. He closed the distance between us in seconds, pulling me into his arms with an urgency that stole my breath. His grip was tight, his scent intoxicating. “God, I missed you,” he murmured into my hair, his voice breaking slightly. “I couldn’t take it, Scarlet. I can’t—”
I pushed him back.
Not gently. Not hesitantly.

Damien’s brows furrowed, confusion flickering in his eyes. “Scarlet?”
I exhaled, steadying myself for what I was about to do. “Damien,” I said, my voice firm. “I Scarlet Black, the omega of the Nightwalked pack reject you, Damien Vanderwood as my mate.”
The world seemed to stop.
Damien froze, his body going rigid, his breath halting mid-inhale. The words hung between us, heavier than anything I had ever spoken before.
