Set during the Scottish Reformation, The Monastery tells the story of a small family of Church vassals living in a secluded dale on the Scottish border. The arrival of an English fugitive from the Queen's justice, whom the family is obliged to hide by the local Abbott, throws the family into the midst religious and political turmoil of the period. Scott explores various themes in the novel including the conflicts between Protestant and Catholic, lay and secular authority, class, and even the supernatural. ~ Submitted by Anonymous
