Veil of Crimson
THE NIGHTBOUND CHRONICLES
BOOK 1: Veil of Crimson
A young detective finds herself on the romance market again once she finds out that she was cheated on. After meeting a mysteriously persuasive stranger at the bar, her life is never the same again. Will she manage to untangle herself from the veil of secrets that surround her? Or will a surprising revelation shatter her entire world?
"NOPD, open up!" I yell out through the door, already feeling the adrenaline pumping through my veins. It's always like this during a raid. I'm already used to it, so it does nothing to me. At least, that's what I like to tell myself.
There's a deafening silence inside, and I can't help but wonder if we got the wrong address. I immediately push the thought aside. I checked it out myself. It can't be a mistake.
I glance at the team behind me. Everyone is staring at me with questioning gazes, having their guns at the ready. I glance at Adrian, standing somewhere in the back. I get mad the moment I meet his gaze. I shouldn't have let him come with us. The guy doesn't even have a weapon on him. Who's going to watch his ass in case things go south?
"NOPD, open up, or we'll kick this door-"
I don't get to finish the sentence because I get interrupted by a loud bang. In the next moment, I can already feel the heat of an explosion, bursting right through that door. This is it. This is how I'm going down.I blink and find myself lying on the ground, hearing a loud ringing inside my ears. I can hear something going on in the background, but it all sounds faded, distant. I'm fully aware that the explosion messed with my hearing, but that doesn't explain anything else about what just happened.
I blink, trying to clear up my foggy vision. There's smoke going up from the charred pieces of the building. Police officers are lying all around me. Some are picking themselves up, and some are completely still. As I finally turn my head, I realize there's someone towering over me. I widen my eyes in surprise as Adrien leans down to examine me. There's soot smudged by the side of his face, continuing all the way down his Armani suit. He's going to go livid once he sees that.
But right now, oddly enough, he seems more concerned about me than himself. "Detective, are you feeling okay?" his voice echoes around me, sounding like it's travelled from far away through all that ringing inside my ears.I stare at him in shock, not knowing what to even say. My blood freezes in my veins as my orientation finally starts working properly and makes me realize something. I'm a little too far away from that door, judging by where I was standing before the explosion. I could get thrown here by the blow, but then, by all rules ... I should be dead right now. There's no way I could've survived that. So, how am I still alive?
Unfold
It takes me a few moments to pull myself together. But before I do, they’re both already attacking me. Or should I say all of them? My pops’ voice clearly stands out in the background. “What happened this time?” I can hear him say.
It triggers me way more than I care to admit. “Did you finally have enough of his snobbishness?” my sister……
