Our main character, Kaelan, was once the strongest god in his realm. He was a god of battle whose power was unmatched in a society that had been destroyed by war and was run by warring gods. Lyra, his mortal love, decided to live with people, which was against the rules of the other gods and made him lose favor with them. But while he was away, betrayal spread, and a god who wanted power took Kaelan's land and locked Lyra up, beating her horribly to get Kaelan to come back.
Even though he has lost a lot of his godly powers, Kaelan comes back as a fallen god stuck in the real world. The book is about Kaelan's search for Lyra's rescue, honor restoration, and power restoration. Along the way, he learns things about his own past that he had forgotten and has to deal with the anger of a former friend who has become an enemy. He goes through dangerous areas, makes friends with unlikely partners, and fights huge evil forces. This shows him the hidden potential of people and helps him find peace between the caring man he became and the heartless god he used to be.

I looked at a quick movement among the trees-a flutter of shadow. Tensing, my hand moved naturally to the hilt of my blade, my senses sharpened. The shadows changed, grouping into figures with a terrible, predatory elegance, their eyes shining with a desire that made my blood stop cold.
