For as long as I can remember the streets was my home. Living among many homeless people underneath a bridge, the tent I’ve lived in is weathered and old, many times I’ve had to patch the darned thing to keep the cold from getting inside not that it helped much. My mother died giving birth to me and Lisa my moms best friend took it upon herself to raise me. They have been friends for a long time. They moved from Kansas city to Cape Town for work. Turns out there was no work here. They couldn’t return to their home town after moving their parents disowned them. Lisa raised me, taught me everything I know and I’m sure mom would be proud. I remember being hidden in Lisa’s suitcase when ever metro came around. She was afraid they’d take me from her. Lisa worked all hours of the day lately she has been looking kinda sick but when I ask she just dismisses me. I attended a local school but I was never allowed to tell anyone where I really lived. Miss Gina an elderly woman woman resembled a grandmother to me took care of me sometimes when Lisa worked away. She met my mother and Lisa a few years back and although she couldn’t take them in due to her house being so full she still tried to help in anyway that she could. If anything happened at school miss Gina was the one they called as she was listed as my emergency contact. Lisa never got better always told me that she just needed more sleep. I offered to help her work but she would refuse every time saying“Just go to school, finish up and then get us out of this rat hole we call home. That’s the only thing you can do for us, promise me”. Two years after that when I turned 12 she died but then it was no longer a secret to me about the kind of work that she did. It’s what made her die. Devastated was and understatement for how I felt, Lisa was the closes thing I had to a mum and losing her was hard. After her funeral miss Gina gave me a big envelope, pat me on my head and said “be safe Logan, it’s just you now. Make sure to keep your promise to Lisa, keep in touch I put my number on the back of that envelope. Come see me some day in your fancy car.” Then she left. For a while I couldn’t bring myself to open the envelope school no longer mattered to me, I had no close friends. Friends meant sleep overs and visits and I couldn’t possibly invite anyone over to sleep in this dump with me. I needed to be a big girl now no one would feed me I’d have to do that all on my own sure miss Gina would but she already had so many kids I’m sure she didn’t need another mouth to feed. Time to look for a job. I went back to school and got myself a job cleaning toilets. The pay wasn’t much but it was enough. After passing matric I felt a sense of pride. I have achieved something but on the other hand college cost money, money I didn’t have so I never bothered looking for a college. I started a new job as a waitress in a bar, still living on the streets. Yes it was dangerous for an 18 year old girl but what other choice did I have? Renting an apartment would mean extra expense were as living on the streets under a bridge in a broken down tent didn’t cost money at all. The tent would have to do, I do need to get a new one through patching up this thing for so many years isn’t working anymore. I still visit miss Gina, she is getting old now. “I never got to ask you what Lisa left for you in that envelope” she asked me one night, i shrugged my shoulders “I never opened it, in all truth I forgot about it.” I had taken the envelope to the post office after I found out that they keep things there for the homeless at a small fee. Even the money I worked for I’d save up there until I had enough saved up to get away from this place for good… I dated but as soon as the guy wanted to come over to my fancy place I’d ghost them. I kinda lived in this little fantasy and made people believe that my parents was rich but after school I stopped doing that as most people now knew where I lived. My life changed though after I opened that envelope one warm evening if only I had opened this thing sooner… after leaving Cape Town I moved to New York City. I have always wanted to visit it after seeing so many pictures of how beautiful this place is. No one told me how expensive it would be to live here though… I was back to being poor as passports and other things took most of the money I have saved and even the money mom and Lisa left me. But I made Lisa a promise and I’ll stick it it… I found a job as a stripper. I hated it but the money was good and security was even better. No one touched me unless I wanted them to, I wasn’t forced to have s*x or do anything I didn’t want to do yes the money was way better then just the stripping money but I wanted Lisa and my mom to be proud of me. Sheila became my best friend since the first day I started, we are now room mates and I couldn’t have asked for a better best friend. Things take a turn after I help a certain man from death… when I find him in his car.

“I do”

She said softly…

I waited patiently for her to speak she seemed like she was searching her memory. She took a deep breath then started talking again.

“After your mother told John she was no longer going to be working for him, he sent his body guard after her. To him she had paid off her debt yet and she cou……
