I knew avoiding Pete was the only way I could keep my sanity, but the moment I stepped onto the college campus, I felt his presence like a shadow behind me. I knew he wasn't supposed to be here, but somehow, I could feel him. The air felt thicker. My hands clenched around the strap of my bag as I walked toward the cafeteria, my heart pounding in my chest like I had just run a marathon.
I wasn’t going to look. Nope. Not even a glance. If I looked, I might find him, and if I found him, I would crumble.
The problem was, Pete Stones knew that too.
I spotted Mandy and Jason sitting in our usual spot near the window. Mandy waved, a bright smile on her face, while Jason had his head buried in his book. I forced a breath, trying to act normal, and walked over. Thank g……
