Chapter 20: Because It's Cute

Rennie rehearsed her answer the whole way out from the furnace room. Why does she want a fire? Because it's strong — she wanted to have it right. A little while later she hands the boy a flower and gives him a reason with no rehearsal in it at all: because it's cute. Two answers from one kid, and I don't think she'd see a contradiction if you held them up side by side. She isn't being sly. She just means things at different depths, and she never checks whether they match.
