A muttered Gaelic curse and a bone-rattling shake of the Rover jarred me awake. I must've fallen asleep, as I found myself curled up, my head pillowed by Kieran's lap.

"What's going on?" I asked, rubbing at my eyes.

Kieran helped me sit up, but kept an arm around me, holding me to his side. I put my hand on his as I suddenly realized that we weren't moving anymore.

"Trail's not passable. Not in this," Rowan said, looking back over his shoulder at us. "We're gonna need to go on foot from here."

Great.

"But - how far are we? I mean, how much further until we're at the um, the -"

"Compound," Rowan supplied. "At the moment, we're pulled off on a service road."

"That's not what she asked," Kieran said, narrowing his eyes. "How much further?"

Rowan hesitated.

"Around about a two-day hike."
